Malachite and azurite get their striking colors from copper. It forms as liquids containing copper drip through in fractures and cavities inside porous rock such as limestone. Over time and with exposure to oxygen, the copper turns blue (azurite) and green (malachite) is formed with layers stacked on top of each other, in concentric circles and nodules.
