Some pieces just evolve on their own - these earnings are a good example. Over the course of about five months, I kept coming back to them to tweak the design. What began as a simple pair of charoite studs soon became something more. Glass beads volunteered, while other components were removed, until finally these dangly, shiny studs came together.

A very specific set of events happened to a very specific bunch of minerals to create charoite. It's found only in Siberia, along the Chara River, which is also where it gets its name. With it's gorgeous purple color, swirling patterns and cats-eye-like chatoyance, it's the best kind of happy natural accident!
